SAVE U.P. HIGH!!!

yes, this is our BATTLE CRY once more! the threat is upon us…
we are not going down without a fight!

it’s time they know how UP High Alumni bleed!

we know you are ready to fight, we know you have questions, we know you want to help…

BE at the LEADER on September 18, Thursday, 3pm.

below is a memo from Dean Enrique Avila of UP Cebu College
———————————————————–

5 September 2008

Memorandum No. EMA-2008-184
To: Prof. Rosario Montano
 Chair, Professional Education Division

From: The Office of the Dean
Subject: Focus on the Strengthening of the Graduate Program or Programs of the Professional Education
Division (PED) and Your Recommendations for the Steps to be Taken by the PED to
Veer Away From Implementing Secondary Education
 ——————————————————————-
———————————————————————

The UPVCC Execom having thoroughly and objectively discussed the raisons d’?re of the Professional
Education Division and the mandate of the U.P. as a graduate and research university, please undertake measures to assess and reexamine the graduate program of the PED to establish a focus that matches or anchors on the centerpiece program(s) of the college. It is suggested, as it was suggested in 2007, that a contingency plan be made urgently in response to vacancies left by retired High School faculty members and the administrative constraints of hiring replacements, since the college is no longer in the
position to hire high school teachers.

I will appreciate receiving your proposal and recommendations on or before 1 October 2008.

Thank you for your usual cooperation.

Enrique M. Avila
Dean

SITUATIONER:
> (1) WE ARE NOT CRYING WOLF HERE. JUST LAST YEAR, WE FOUGHT OFF THE THREAT OF
DOWNSIZING… BUT THEY ONLY CONCEDED FOR ONE YEAR. THE REASON IT WAS SCRAPPED:
BECAUSE THE DEAN FAILED TO HOLD CONSULTATIONS. NOW, THEY ARE AT IT AGAIN.

> (2) THE DEAN HAS SAID THAT THE HIGH SCHOOL WILL BE CLOSED, NATURALLY. HE HAS NO
PLANS FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL. PRES. ROMAN SAID THE SAME THING. DURING THE MULTI-SECTORAL
ASSEMBLY, DEAN AVILA SAID, “UP MANILA IS KNOWN FOR MEDICINE, LOS NOS FOR AGRICULTURE. WOULD YOU LIKE CEBU TO BE KNOWN FOR ITS HIGH SCHOOL?”

> (3) UP CEBU COLLEGE IS WORKING TOWARDS AUTONOMY STATUS. THIS REQUIRES THAT UP CEBU
HAVE A MINIMUM OF 4 COLLEGES SET UP. THEY NEED RESOURCES, THEY NEED ITEMS. THE HIGH SCHOOL’S PHASE OUT IS THE EASY ANSWER.  OUR BELOVED TEACHERS ARE RETIRING… ONCE THEY RETIRE, THEIR ITEM WILL NO LONGER BELONG TO THE  HIGH SCHOOL, IT WILL BE SIPHONED OFF TO THE COLLEGE. AND NO
REPLACEMENTS WILL BE HIRED.  (NOTE: YOU CANNOT TEACH IN UP WITHOUT AN ITEM.)

> (4) THE PROFESSIONAL  EDUCATION DIVISION (OF WHICH THE HIGH SCHOOL BELONGS) WILL STAY,
BUT THE HIGH SCHOOL CANNOT. ACCORDING TO THEM, THERE IS NO PLACE FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL
IN UP’S MANDATE AND IN THE NEW UP CHARTER.

> (5) UPIS in DILIMAN, UP RURAL HIGH SCHOOL in LOS BANOS, UP ILOILO HIGH SCHOOL ARE NOT
UNDER THREAT.

======

i’m happy to report that after talks with the U.P. chancellors, it’s been resolved that U.P. High Cebu will continue to have its regular two classes per level. hopefully, the talks about downsizing will now remain a memory.

go little iskos and iskas! do our school proud! [updated march 1, 2008]

======

this page is a departure from the original purpose of this blog. however,  i feel the need to create this page to show my support to the school that served as my playground for four years and the school that paved my entrance to U.P. College.

U.P. High needs testimonials from the Alumni attesting their support of the school. Currently, the high school received orders of downsizing to one section and probably eventual phase out of the high school.

To show your support, mail your testimonials to inday_balt@yahoo.com now! Scroll down to get a better and clearer view of the school’s situation from Prof. Purita T. Baltazar, the school’s principal, herself.

To All UP High School Cebu Alumni:
We are very happy and touched by the immediate response from the alumni. Your concern and support have strengthened our resolve to fight for the high school. We have already written to the Dean and to the UP President Emerlinda Roman regarding our stand. We have requested for a dialogue with them.  I believe we will be provided that chance for a dialogue this January.
I have been receiving emails from alumni stating your support to the high school.  Letters from you are highly appreciated.  We would like to compile them as testimonials for the high school and present them with other documents to UP Pres. Roman when she and other officials come to Cebu in January.
We would appreciate a resolution from the alumni attesting its support for the High School.  Even individual testimonials of how UP High has helped them would be a great help.
(please send your letters and/or testimonials to inday_balt@yahoo. com )
