tangub city’s 09 christmas symbols festival

10 Jan

sometime back, i heard that there’s a certain place to be in Mindanao during christmas time. that place is Tangub City – a 3rd class city in the province of Misamis Occidental. it’s one of my yet to check places in the country as i also heard that Tangub City is known as the Christmas Capital of Mindanao. what can i say, there’s something about display of changing lights that fascinates me. and beautiful lights is exactly what the city of tangub offers to locals and tourists alike. so before the whole office went for a break, i sort of asked one of my officemates to check out tangub city for me. see, i mentioned that i wanted to check this place in mindanao, but for the love of me couldn’t remember the name of the town. luckily, armando knows about the place. he mentioned that tangub is just 30 minutes away from his hometown of ozamis. he assured me that i was definitely referring to tangub city as he’d been to the city several times especially back in the days when he was active in joining dance competitions held in tangub. after our little conversation, i immediately googled the place – and voila! TANGUB CITY it is.

i didn’t have a travel itinerary last december for so many different reasons that i thought of just asking him to do a side trip to tangub. with no travel plans then, i thought vicarious traveling wouldn’t be too bad. fortunately also that he asked me for a little favor while on vacation that i managed to remind him about checking the place out.

so here it is; pictures of 2009’s Christmas Symbol in Tangub City.

i apologize though for the lack of picture descriptions. hehe, that’s the downside of vicarious traveling [thus, i encourage everyone to travel when opportunity presents itself]. i failed to interview john about the pictures as i was busy with something when he gave me the pictures and he had to go somewhere else. anyway, from what i’ve researched the Christmas Symbol festival is actually a competition among barangays. according to one site, it’s one contest of Christmas displays using indigenous materials. for 17 years now [2009], the city’s public plaza hosts a display of gigantic and well-lit Christmas symbols from the first of December until a few days in January.

okay, enough talk. here are the pictures.

salamat dude for going to tangub and taking these pictures and for granting me permission to use them here.
